Public Debate On Network Neutrality

Hello Everyone,

I am proud to say that our First Public Debate was a success! Let us continue this momentum for our next Public Debate on Network Neutrality.

Resolution: Resolved that Congress should adopt legislation that ensures Network Neutrality.

When: Wednesday, October 25th
Where: Physics Building Room 210
What Time: The debate starts at 7pm, but show up early for good seats (debaters always sit together!).
Should I Attend?: YES, YOU SHOULD!

Alok Gupta (Chairman and Professor, Information and Decision Sciences Department at the Carlson School of Management)

Resolution: Should the University discontinue its policy banning carry of firearms by licensed students, staff, and faculty?

When: Tuesday, October 17th
Where: Pillsbury Hall Room 110
What Time: The debate starts at 7pm, but show up early for good seats (debaters always sit together!).

A hearty congratulations is in order to the debaters who competed in Mankato yesterday at PLUM 10.1. We had several top ten speakers as well as a gold round winning team of Josh Coverstone and Tony Schwab. The other teams breaking into bronze rounds were Zikiria Choudhary and Sean Olson as well as Daryl Pinto and Sarah Finstad.

The first week of class went well we had a demo debate featuring the talents of Tom Meyer and Monica Heth the team co-presidents as well as Dave Bratt and Dave Watson the team co-vice presidents. The team of Tom and Dave B proposed that the federal government should stop giving assistance to rebuild private property after hurricanes, while Dave W and Monica proudly opposed. Although no official tally was taken, the round was too close to call by any measure.

Welcome to Fall Debate '06! Both Tom and I are looking forward to a great year. A few things have changed, but one thing that hasn't is the awesomeness that is debate. Here is a quick introduction to this year executive board:

Monica Heth- (that's me) This year, although we all mourn the loss of "The Zoss", I will be sharing the presidential duties with the esteemed Thomas Meyer. He is a neuroscience major with major affection for pudding snack packs (come on who doesn't love them).

David Bratt and Dave Watson are this years vice presidents. They are in charge of novice training and have tons (TONS!) of great ideas on how to make everyone on the team better at debate.

Zikiria Chaudhary is in charge of setting up our public debates. He charmed everyone in the class with campaign literature and now will charm the rest of the University community with stimulating public events.

Andy Delain, as publicist, will have the opportunity to surpass Jason Schousboe's wit every week in the debate publication "Week In Review" (I wish that we had a better name for it, Any Suggestions?).

Michelle Hogler adds more than just a pretty face to our team. She will put her exemplary organizational skills to the test as the team's historian.

Lastly, but definitely not least, Shannon Mitchell will continue her reputation as the life of the party as social chair. I can't think of anyone better for this position especially since Mitchell got hot.

On behalf of the entire executive board I welcome you to this year of debate and speak for all of us when I say that our enthusiasm has never been higher.
